It has been an amazing few months and we are rapidly approaching the end of the calendar year and our first 4 months of being in business. I wanted to take the time to write a blog post thanking everyone for supporting us (and even if it's just reading the post or looking at our site) and tell you a little about us.
Black Maria Designs is the creation of Todd Sherman and myself (Sean Lang). What originally started as a hobby to support our hobby (miniature wargaming) has turned in to a business. We started renting time on a laser to make things for the NOVA Open 2015 and slowly grew to making stuff for friends in the hobby.
The name, Black Maria (/məˈraɪ.ə/ mə-RY-ə), is slang for a police van or "paddy wagon". Todd wanted to avoid the typical "something+laser" combo that is very tempting to use and decided to pitch the name. He was able to link the name to Malifaux (a game that they both play) since the name was common in Victorian times (a theme in Malifaux) and is a line from a song from a band that I am is very passionate about (the band is "The Sisters of Mercy" and the song is "Afterhours").
Enough about the past, time to look forward. We have a few things on the horizon. Our hobby products (tiered hobby rack) and templates/markers have been a big hit. As has the "ADCO" signs. Three major growing releases; our gantry system, "Project: Volk", and "Mob Town". More planned on the horizon.
Our goal is to push forward into the new year and drop a few major releases. We are pushing for a 1st quarter surprise that has us excited. Not to mention working on a ton of new things to finish designing.
We want to thank everyone for the support and encouragement. Can't wait to show you what 2016 has in store.
